Impact of Computer in Early Years Learning

The video above shows;'Computers in Early Childhood Education'
The educator in the video explains reasons to integrate computer into early years learning is due to ICT would fulfill the different types of learning styles. The different types of learning styles refers to Gardner’s multiple intelligence such as; auditory learner, visual learner, or tactile learning. The games with music and attractive pictures would attract the learners to learn. Which is interesting and I feel will be used for teachers as guideline in preparing lesson for children in their classroom. It is important to know the learning styles of our children before we plan our lesson to make the learning effective and meaningful for a child.

Ipad Games

Here's What I Think About Ipad Games:
As we know, Ipad games are new trend among children to spend their free time. Some parents also use Ipad games as a babysitter for their child when they are busy in their working life. However, isn't Ipad games good for children? In my view Ipad game is really a nice tool for kids but I believe sometimes it is depending on the situation and an individual who is keeping in touch with it. This article link below shows parents have responsibility in helping the children while the children are engage in Ipad games and it will influence the effect of the Ipad games effectively. For example, as the adult we can, carefully choose the types of games for the children, limit the time of playing with it and adult intervention with children is the best way. The most important thing is change our perspective about Ipad games. The Ipad games can be use in a positive way to help children learn knowledge and skill from it.  I agree with +misheel kaur  that, children can learn using ICT through educational games ;children can gain skills and knowledge. For example, problem-solving skills, improving their fine-motor skills by using their fingers to play and many more.

Toolbelt Theory?

What is Toolbelt Theory?
I really did not know the meaning of Toolbelt; it was brand new thing for me; I goggle; I came across on what was Toolbelt Theory.According to Socol (2007), he said that “Toolbelt theory” suggests that teacher must teach our students how to analyze task, the task completion environment, their own skills and capabilities, an appropriate range of available tools and let them begin to make their own decisions. I have gone through the article; where I have read the slides presentation by Ira David Socol; ” Toolbelt Theory that has further explanation. This is a framework; TEST (task, environment, skills and tools). Besides that, the slide in the article; made me realize the importance of choosing or selecting the right tool for person’s needs

Moreover, highlighting the importance  is also important. I agree with +Kathleen Ngui that even as our world is changing. We as teacher; I have to upgrade myself and provide children will effective and meaningful learning that will help them enhance their knowledge.

Assignment 1

I find the assignment 1: Part 2 to be very challenging. I am really thankful that, I have a lecturer like Ms. Kim. Attending her lectures has been so helpful to me; as she explains things clearer for me to understand and to know step by step on what to do for the assignment.

Last Saturday, there were interesting programs or webpage that Ms.Kim showed us in class. I found Prezi  and Glogster quite interesting although both are two different programs. The presentation the webpage is eye catching to me; as, I tried to use Glogster.  In the beginning, I was a little confused on what to do. I found it very challenging for me; as a first time user; there are so many things to look at and adjust; for example, the wall design, the arrangement of the slides and many more but with the help of a YouTube video on your left. I manage to understand better on how to use it. However, I still have not decide which program to use for my Part2. I will try my very best to make my presentation interesting.

Kidblog

What is Kidblog?

Kidblog is a safe and simple blogs for student to use and enables them to publish posts and participate in academic discussions within a secure classroom blogging community. Besides that, Kid blog, gives student the opportunity to write in their comfort zone which is anywhere; for example, the computer lab, at home, and on their iPad or even Smartphone. It is designed for teachers who want to provide each student with an individual blog. Moreover; using the Kid blog, the teachers do not have to worry about student getting distracted as; the Kid blog does not have any advertisement in it and the teachers can use the blog to maintain complete control over student blogs and the student’s user accounts. This will be a good teaching tool.

Welcoming ICT in the Classroon for Children

Looking  around the world today where children being exposed to technology in early age. Moreover,  children are surrounded with variety of  Technology. Therefore,  the usage  of ICT in the classroom is very important for providing opportunities for children to learn and gain information using it . Children gain skills, knowledge and conceptual understanding about and through the technology they used. We can see that, Wong (2006) point out that technology can play a part in supporting face-to-face teaching and learning in the classroom.

Thus, the use of ICT can help students to become knowledgeable, reduce the amount of direct instruction teaching and allows children to have some independent skill develop by giving them opportunity to explore using gadgets and technology materials which will  allow teachers an opportunity to help those students with particular needs and little more attention in learning and understanding the lesson.  ICT improve the quality of teaching and learning. Being said that, there are also obstacles of integrating ICT in children’s classroom.

What does this word really mean? TPACK

As I was going through study desk, I came across the word TPACK.
What does this word really mean ? I thought to myself. The only help resource that goes through my mind when, I do not know something; MR.GOOGLE. I goggled and came to understand that it actually stands for content of knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and technological knowledge.  Below, you can see and understand more about each of the part which stands for

TPACK;
  • Content Knowledge (CK) – Content Knowledge is knowledge about the actual subject matter that is to be learned or taught. As Shulman (1986) stated, teachers must know and understand the subjects they teach, including: knowledge of central facts, concepts, theories and procedures within a given field; knowledge of explanatory frameworks that organize and connect ideas; and knowledge of the rules of evidence and proof (Koehler, 2011a).
  • Pedagogical Knowledge (PK) - Pedagogical Knowledge is deep knowledge about the processes and practices or methods of teaching and learning and how it encompasses (among other things) overall educational purposes, values and aims. Pedagogical knowledge requires an understanding of cognitive, social and developmental theories of learning and how they apply to students in their classroom (Koehler, 2011b).
  • Technological Knowledge (TK) - Technology knowledge is knowledge about standard technologies such as books and chalk and blackboard, as well as more advanced technologies such as the Internet and digital video. This would involve the skills required to operate particular technologies(Koehler, 2011c).
tpack-19ly6c1
This three important component must work together in order to let the teacher to achieve in their teaching. Teacher need to have sufficient information and resources regarding the 3 component to make the lesson more effective. Teacher must always know to make creative links between what is being learned (content), how it is taught (pedagogy), and the appropriate tools (technology). I find the TPACK  something interesting and different as; I never heard about it before.I  would love to try to use the component of TPACK  in my teaching and see the effect on my kids at school.

Effects of technology

Looking at how technology effect our lives. I believe most of us have positive feedback or reaction on them. Technology has really help us connect to people around in ease without even have to travel. Just with a click we are able to talk and communicate. For instance; SKYPE which is a  part of Microsoft been founded in 2003. Skype allows us to connect  with people around the globe and even our loved ones for free and there is a feature called; webcam, which allows the user to be able to see one another face to face.
The app really plays an important part of my life for the pass 6 months which helps me connect with my sister who is studying in London. We were worried that the closeness between us will fade away as; we are going to live in different countries; but trust me Skype has made me feel like nothing has changed; although we are now in a different country and time zone but; its feels like we are right beside each other when we are Sky ping. The advancement in technology is a really gives a good effect on people.
I can see that,  my  friend Chloe has also shared about Skype which show this app really helps people to stay connected with their love ones who are far away.

ICTs changing the world

In this generation or century, everyone on earth live with all types of Digital Resources. Looking at myself; I can’t live without my hand phone. I had to use my phone every day. Moreover, from normal black board in primary and secondary schools now the use of projector and laptop to teach can be seen. The world is changing to usage of gadgets to teach. Great technology can make an enormous difference. What we’re really aiming for isn’t to predict the future, but to change the future.  We want to improve and save lives.”
(Greg, 2013). Technology can provide children with a better a bright future which are changes that is happening in the world. We can see in the below video on how ICT is changing the world around us.

What is ICT?

What is ICT?

I believe ICT allows us to making learning more interesting. However; in Early Childhood Education;  ICT could include computer software and hardware, Digital cameras and Video cameras, Internet, Telecommunications tools, programmable toys, and many other devices and resources (Bolstad, 2004). Moreover,  ICT defined; as anything which allowed us to get information, to communicate with each other or to have an effect on the environment using Electronics or Digital Equipment. By using or integrating ICT in the classroom will increase the level of children’s learning; which includes children’s cognitive, social and emotional development (Stephen & Plowman, 2003, p. 4).

My thoughts about ICT

First week of class, I thought setting up a blog was an easy task for me as; I have a personal blog where; I love to update about things that happen in my life which; I did not update for long time. I totally forget how to set up a blog. When,I found a link; which I have attach below on how to create a blog; made my task of creating my blog easy.

However; as I go through the first week of class, I can say that;  ICT could be something related to exploring different Technology and learning them. Moreover, it also could be integrating Digital Technology in children’s learning. However, I believe that; I could understand and  develop ICT better as I go through all the information in study desk.
Have a good start ahead everyone.
